Are We Becoming A Nation of Thin-Skinned Whiners?

t-shirtAmerica is getting soft and here’s why.  Everyday, I see and read about more complainers, cry-babies, and thin-skinned whiners.  Whatever happened to the old adage, “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me”?  It seems that, now, everyone is offended by something and everyone is willing to don a cap with a big “V” for “victim” on it. I don’t get it.

Take, for example, President Obama.  He’s the biggest cry-baby of them all.  Here’s the most powerful man in the world and he’s upset with a cable news network.  How many snide remarks are we going to hear from him about Fox News?   The fact that Fox News has more viewership than any other cable news network doesn’t seem to mean anything to him.  But why is that?  Because, for example, The O’Reilly Factor, which I watch every day, presents both sides of every issue and allows me to decide.  O’Reilly asks tough questions, not like soft-ball interviewers like the recent Steve Kroft interview of the President on 60 Minutes.  Unlike Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews who probably kneel in front of lighted candles, burning incense before an Obama bobble head figure before they go on the air, O’Reilly is rounding up commentators on the left and the right to discuss an issue.

And how about women?  Women are easily offended by a lot of stuff.  They’re offended if a man holds a door for them, opens a car door, or offers to carry something.  The latest outrage is directed atEnterprise Florida, a business organization that promotes Florida’s job growth, for coming up with this logo:

Somehow the use of a “tie” is offensive.  According to Pamela Rogan, the President of the Central Florida Chapter of National Association of Women Business Owners, the logo should’ve featured a briefcase or an iPhone instead of a necktie.  Really?  I’m wondering ifEnterprise Florida is going to cave on this one.  My guess – yes.

How about some Arab-American groups who were offended by a Super Bowl Coke commercial showing an Arab + camel + desert scene?  Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies said to NBC News, “The Coke commercial for the Super Ball is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish camel jockeys, and they have no chance to win in the world.”

And what about atheists who are offended at Christmas time and demand that Christmas trees be called holiday trees?  Or taking “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance?  Or being offended by teachers wearing religious symbols?

The older I get the more I’m convinced some people wake up in the morning and say, “okay, what’s going to offend me today?”  That’s got to be the reason behind Principal Verenice Gutierrez’s notion that PB&J sandwiches could hold racist connotations.  What she has a problem with is the example of a peanut butter sandwich in classroom lessons.  She says, “What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?  Another way would be to say, ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’  Let them tell you.  Maybe they eat torta.  Or pita.”  So according to this educator, everything taught in schools must be cloaked in multi-cultural terms;  forget the fact that this isAmerica.  I’m sure an American kid going to school inMexico is given those options.

And we shouldn’t leave out Asian-Americans who were apparently offended by Miley Cyrus’ goofy photo:

This dopey photo is so offensive to some that in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles, plaintiff Lucie J. Kim claims that each of the approximately one million Asian Pacific Islanders in L.A. County, is entitled to a minimum of $4,000 for a civil-rights violation stemming from the photograph. The damages could exceed $4 billion.  I wonder if the Asian guy in the photo is standing in line for his $4 grand.

I don’t get it, but if you do, God bless you.

Author Bio:

For over twenty years, Leona has tried to heed her husband’s advice, “you don’t have to say everything you think.” She’s failed miserably. Licensed to practice law in California and Washington, she works exclusively in the area of child abuse and neglect. She considers herself a news junkie and writes about people and events on her website, “I Don’t Get It,” which she describes as the “musings of an almost 60-year old conservative woman on political, social and cultural life in America.” It’s not her intention to offend anyone who “gets it.” She just doesn’t. Originally from Brooklyn, and later Los Angeles, she now lives with her husband, Michael, on a beautiful island in the Pacific Northwest, which she describes as a bastion of liberalism.

I’m Left Wing, don’t bitch about me being a bitcher because I’m a Democrat and I don’t bitch anymore than anyone else in this county. Now listen… I tend to agree with the bulk of this article, with the exception of Atheists being “offended” by Christians. No, we’re not so much offended but annoyed by the “This is a Christian Nation” ramblers who think they have dominion over All beliefs in this country. Religion should basically be Neutral and kept out of politics, schools, etc. Not displayed as a status symbol or rammed down peoples throats.

Now the problem I have with this nation today is with these crybaby whiners who are basically Spoiled Rotten and this is due mainly to the forces of Capitalism telling everyone that “you don’t deserve second-best” and you Need-___ fill-in-the-blank which primarily takes the form of some Brand Name which you “Need” and if you don’t have it you’re an inferior and you’re missing out on some great truth of the universe because you’re pathetic life is incomplete. Like I Love all these internet and TV commercials battling it out over who is the Fastest like Real people really give a damn about it all! I’ve been on “pathetic” dial-up Internet service for Decades, having started on BBSs. I get used to it because I use it for simple text communication (like here!) and I don’t have a tantrum if a web page takes a minute to load–I Don’t Need streaming this, that, or anything else beause I’m a real-worlder and this is merely a Tool for me not a way of life.

What bothers me about all these spoiled brat Americans is the hyper-sensitivity. They have to have their way or they throw tantrums which leads to rioting. They can’t see things from different perspectives and think their one-true-way is the Only way and Only viewpoint. It’s reached the stage where we have these “give them an inch and they’ll want a foot; give them a foot and they’ll want a yard” entitled Twits. It gets bloody serious when they’re somehow a part of certain specific groups (i.e. same religion or race or something like that). Then you throw in this Persecution Complex and just Watch Out! It’s fed by the politically correct crowd who basically don’t want to Offend anyone (because that’s the worst offense in existence, ya know!)–and Offense is a wonderful thing in America these days because there’s Countless bloodsucking Lawyers who’ll take cases with such Petty little charges like “psychological distress” or things ridiculously along those lines… The biggest joke of course is that these cases are Successful. Why? Well, for one thing the jurors who are chosen are absolute Morons easily manipulated by the lawyers… And the sums of money dishes out in courts are nothing but mind-blowingly astounding, and beyond realistic!

  • JSS

Yes and a nation of entitled spoiled brats, too. Everybody in America blames everybody else for their own misery. “Well, I’m white, so I have to live under affirmative action”, “Well I’m black so I can’t be successful in America, cause everyone hates me”, “Well, I’m Christian and people treat Christians so badly”, “Well, those Jews own everything and exploit us”, “Well, the fact that I have 10 kids with 7 different men and don’t work has nothing to do with why I’m poor”, “Well, the fact that I eat 5,000 calories a day has nothing to do with why I can’t work, I’m ‘sick'”…On and on and on…SHUT UP ALREADY AMERICA. No matter how bad you have it, you still have it 100 times better than most of the rest of the world. Get an education, get a job, work, raise your kids with morals and stop the bitching about everything. Thank you.

    • JSS

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention if you tell anybody to take accountability for their own actions, then you are to be strung up from the rafters and burned as a witch, racist,Gd hating going-to hell devil worshiper, anti America flag burning communist. Does that about cover it?

  • Jassie

America is too whinny, too liberal, too-self entilted and a “sue me silly” nation. America officially sucks, which is why some of us are learning other languages and getting away from the American mind-set of bullshit. Yet racism runs rapid in this country. America is the source for all of this garbage.

  • Andrew James Wright

The ironic thing about many of the comments posted here proves her point how thin skinned people are. Which remind me “WAH, she must have said something at some point in this article that I don’t agree with, or offends me, so I’ll chew her out here.”

  • chief98110

There are so many people who have nothing better to do but complain and
cry about all the things in their lives that cause them the slightest
distress. Sadly, those same people today are facing hardships like
their coffee being too hot or too cold. Not all Americans are wimps but
the number is rising fast. Gone are the days of past when Americans
,during the great wars, pulled together to save our country from our
enemies. Now America seems to have no purpose or direction — sad.

  • wally12

I agree. There is way too much statements and libel noise about nothing.

  • jazzdrums

in this new america and president barry emphasis on social justice..what happen to jobs…everyone feels emboldened no matter how trivial the perceived offense..most people who are reasonable know if there is hate or racism behind a remark…lets get real….random thought..i have thin skin when the obamas are burning up jet fuel separatately going places they did not go before 08 and most likely wont return after 2016..michelle o skiing…come on…she love those perks.

  • Brian_Bayless

Oh good, another article about how liberals are whiners.Very original. Good thing you didnt include all of the other whining from the right in this article, otherwise some people here might think that whining is not exclusive to just one party. Everyone whines, not just the people who you disagree with, politically. This article, Leona, is whining.

  • meow-meow

And you and your teabagging friends are the biggest whiners of them all: “Oh boo, hoo, hoo…war on Christians…war on Christmas…the President is a RACIST…someone save us!” LOL! Suck it up. YOU LOST BERNIE.

    • Ron F

I agree that everyone whines but Bernie didn’t write the article. Leona did.

  • Ron F

Conservatives have been whining and complaining about MSNBC, CNN and the main street media for years. Atheists were offended by Christmas trees but Christians were offended by people saying Happy Holidays or something else instead of Merry Christmas. The lawsuit over the photograph is silly but it will probably be dismissed. I don’t know if the left tends to be more skin-thinned than conservatives. My guess is that people on the left think conservatives are thin skinned. It doesn’t matter to me because I think there are plenty of skin-thinned people on both sides. As for the Enterprise Florida ad, the last I read is Enterprise Florida is going to go forward with the ad so, at least to this point, the complaints have not changed anything.

    • Patrick H.

“My guess is that people on the left think conservatives are thin skinned.”

I think you have a point on it being a matter of perspective.

  • Wheels55

I wonder what the easily offended people think they get by being whiners. Some attention? If so, do they really think it is the right kind of attention?
I think being truly PC is ignoring 95% of “offensive” stuff and be productive with your day. It seems that thinking has me in the minority. So, I am now a minority – don’t offend me!!!

    • Mallet Head

As one who is not very productive, I am offended by your productivity and demand you pay attention to a minimum of 7% of “offensive” stuff.

      • Wheels55

OK. How many Obamas does it take to screw in a light bulb? …none. Because he would form a committee of twelve who would then form a committee of 6 who would then do nothing until the sun comes up – causing all of Washington to claim they turn the lights back on. Then, at sun down, they would have to meet again to solve the lights going out issue. That is actually politically correct.
This is politically incorrect: how many Obamas does it take to screw in a light bulb? .. one, because Super Barack can and does do everything!

        • Brian_Bayless

I feel asleep two sentences into your post.

  • Roger Ward

Overwhelmingly, the politicals views of the thin-skinned crybabies you refer to are of the liberal left. Apparently, it’s the left that has the capacity for being easily offended …. much more so than those in the center or on the right. Why is this? (Dunno …. but I don’t know many people on the right who walk around with the same capacity for being hurt and offended as those on the left do.)

    • Ernie Kaputnik

I agree with you that it is primarily people on the left that whine and cry, but it is not necessarily because they are thin-skinned. Rather it is a tactic to stop, stifle and suppress debate by their political rivals. The left embraces minorities not because they care about them, but because minorities are powerful weapon. To wit, if you were to point out that government dependency is a staple of the black community or hispanics you would be called a racist. It doesn’t matter that you were speaking truthfully. What does matter is that you are pointing out an uncomfortable fact that the left cannot debate and thus you must be silenced.

      • Brian_Bayless

Please, the “Right” whined and complained after the election, blaming the media for the reason that Mitt lost. Gimme a break. If you dont take responsibility, the problem will never the change. The GOP is a trainwreck and unless they fix from within, they will probably lose again in 2016.

        • nameless

Brian, I wish you would get cancer and die or your wife would get raped or both.

Atheists would like nothing more than to achieve spiritual domination over the country. In order to do this, they have to defend their religion fervently. They figured out that the way to do this is by being offended about everything that goes against their religion.
