When Is a Scandal Not A Scandal?

O and CI don’t like reading the New York Times in the morning because I’m always afraid my head will explode and that would make it difficult to go through the rest of the day.  My aforementioned head almost did explode when I read this headline on page one:

I.R.S. Focus on Conservatives

Gives G.O.P. an Issue to Seize On

Get it?  The real story isn’t that the IRS abused its considerable power by giving special scrutiny to groups with the name “Tea Party” or “Patriot” in their title … or that they actually went far beyond those keywords and took aim at groups seeking to “make America a better place to live” or those who would “criticize how the country is being run.” No, the real story is that this gives Republican an issue to seize on.

Aren’t Democrats interested in seizing on this despicable behavior by one of the most powerful agencies of the federal government?  The New York Times, I’m guessing, never thought about that.

Here’s the problem, as succinctly summarized on Hot Air:

“If it’s a scandal involving Republicans, the story is the scandal. If it’s a scandal involving Democrats, the story — or at least a significant part of it — is whether and how Republicans will ‘politicize’ the scandal for their advantage.

Bingo!

It’s the same with Benghazi.  Liberal journalists are more concerned with how Republicans will use the apparent cover-up to hurt Hillary Clinton’s chances in 2016 than they are with finding out what really went wrong and who tried to mislead the American people about it.

Here’s Exhibit A, a headline in the Los Angeles Times:  ““Partisan politics dominates House Benghazi hearing” … as if this is Washington politics as usual and we’re not going to learn anything from the witnesses who swore to tell the truth.

Too many Washington journalists see everything through a prism of politics.  Benghazi isn’t about the death of four Americans … it’s about the future of Hillary Clinton.  The IRS scandal isn’t about the abusive use of federal government power … it’s about how the GOP will use it to score political points.

But even if you play by these rules, why isn’t the story on page one of the New York Times about how Democrats in the Obama administration may have been going after conservative groups … for political gain?

Why isn’t the Benghazi story framed in a way that questions Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s political spin?  Is she trying to stay out of trouble precisely because she wants to run for president?  Was Mr. Obama more concerned about winning re-election, running in part on the phony premise that he had al-Qaeda on the run, than he was in admitting early on that al-Qaeda was responsible for the attack in Benghazi? Is he now more concerned about his reputation than … well, than anything else?

There has been a subtle shift in how Mr. Obama’s most loyal base, the so-called mainstream media, are treating him.  When ABC News revealed the emails about Benghazi and their many re-writes to scrub any reference to terrorism (instead blaming a dopey video for the attacks) that gave mainstream journalists permission to question the president in a way they hadn’t before.  If Fox came up with those emails the mainstream media response would have been a giant yawn.

There may be a new, less adoring relationship between the slobbering media and their hero, the president – especially after it came out that his justice department got a secret court order to go through phone records of journalists at the Associated Press. Now that’s something they can really get worked up over.  Benghazi? Who cares! IRS? Big deal.  But when you go after journalists, they’ll turn that into Watergate, the sequel.

But if there is a new tougher relationship between the press and the president, I’m guessing it won’t last long.

Great article. My radar has been going off for years about these “mixed message” headlines followed by a lengthy left of center editorial article that coaches the reader on what conclusions they should reach..

  • Big Truck Joe

So the MSM tells us that Pres Bush or VP Cheney were so petty that they outed a supposed “CIA” operative Valerie Plame years after her husband had the audacity to write an Op Ed in the Wash Post denegrating the Iraq war and reasons for getting into it. Remember? Thats what the MSM told us….for months on each Sunday show and in front page headlines. The Bush Administration was that spitefull and petty because outing her had no real benefit to anyone. Now we’ve got real scandals like: Fast and Furious (reason-DOJ wanted increase in automatic weapons death so they could call for ban on all automatic weapons), Benghazi (reason-Obama/Hillary lied to American public about the video because they didnt want the Al Qaida terrorist attack to make Obama look bad pre election and days after he gave speech essentially saying Al Qaida was routed), IRS targeting conservatives (reason- Tea Party had strong foundation in building anti obama grass roots efforts that would hamper his re-election campaign) and AP being bugged by the DOJ (to root out informants telling the real secrets behind Benghazi to quell any damaging truth from coming out about Benghazi up to and inlcuding we armed Al Quaida to go into Syria to topple Assad regime). Thats the difference between real scandals – forward thinking scandals that will bring some benefit to you in the future through chicanery and the Bush Admin/Valerie Plame witch hunt that was supposedly done just out of spite and hate and had no real benefit in outting her to anyone in the Bush Admin. And we’re asked by the MSM how the Repubs will use these against the administration- because they are so partisan that they’re every action must occur out of hatred for the Democrats. Face it – we’ve lost any investigative journalism in the US and those that do are labeled anit-Obama, not pro truth. Sad indeed.

Right again Bernie! If the headline doesn’t match the actual story then feel free to raise an eyebrow.

Your opinion of him is irrelevant to the fact that he’s correct on this issue and many others. When Is a Scandal Not A Scandal?
Answer; When a Politician; (Lawmakwer), explains
    .

  • Drew Page

Great piece Bernie. You got it exactly right. The current administration is dishonest and deceitful and the guy at the top sets the tone. Like his mentors in Chicago, Mr. Obama has learned how to get what he wants through his appointees while insulating himself (“The family’s got a lot of buffers Senator” ) from the actions they take on his behalf. Like the former Chicago Mayor, he can stand up in front of a news conference when the fecal matter hits the fan and with that look of incredulousness, say “I don’t know what happened or how it happened, but I’ll look into it.”

  • Wil

What cover up?? What is it that you think Obama was covering up? He called
it an act of terror right from the start. If you were paying attention, you
would have remembered that the right-wing smear meisters had their panties in
knots because Obama only said “act of terror” and not “Al Qaeda” and
    “terrorism”.

    • Jeffreydan

Really now? Please show the quote where Obama specifically referred to the Benghazi attack as an act of terror. Then, you go ahead and explain his repeatedly blaming protests over a video if he knew the truth “right from the start.”

      • Wil

Sept. 12: Obama Said Of Benghazi: “No Acts Of Terror Will Ever Shake The Resolve Of This Great Nation.” On September 12, the day after the attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, President Obama gave a speech in the Rose Garden. He said, “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.” [WhiteHouse.gov, 9/12/12]

        • Jeffreydan

Whoever read my last post to you should have made sure you understood it. I said to point out where he SPECIFICALLY called Benghazi an act of terror. I heard his RG speech, and as usual he was careful to word it in very general terms.
If you think about it, your claim doesn’t exactly favor Obama. A guy who knew the facts wouldn’t blame a video on multiple occasions, now would he?
I understand your need to duck my second challenge, though I personally wouldn’t be that cowardly.

Anything else you want to embarrass yourself about?

          • Wil

So you are saying that Obama was lying through his teeth when he called what happened in Benghazi and ‘Act of Terror’ the day after the attack?

          • Jeffreydan

Were you asleep every time BO repeatedly claimed the attack was a spontaneous protest over a stupid Youtube video, Wil?

Look, I get that you’re dug in. I know the only thing you care about when he does something wrong is that he gets away with it, but you’re wasting your energy now.

          • Wil

            The
Accountability Review Board, which Pickering headed with retired Adm. Mike
Mullen, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Gen.
            Martin Dempsey disagree with you!

          • Jefreydan

Why don’t you ask the relatives of the men slain in Benghazi, the ones whose faces BO wouldn’t look at, and were lied to by him & HC right by the caskets, what they think? Why don’t you ask the people under attack who reached out for help but got turned down? Why don’t you ask the witnesses the administration tried to silence?
There are an awful lot of people and factors that trump every tool you libs have been trying to use to hide this abomination, and you’re fooling nobody.
Now, if you avoid the point about the video angle BO and others used for weeks one more time, consider that your unconditional surrender.

          • Wil

            Diplomats
like military and CIA are often in tough situations. Stevens had a mission, and
made a choice to keep it open. Does anyone believe he was forced to be there?
Or, that Obama and Clinton should have insisted he leave? In hindsight, maybe
            they should have.

          • Jeffreydan

Are all these cute little deflections on a list that someone else prepares for you, or is this crap coming from your colon?

Believe it or not, you might benefit from what I tell you here: these straw arguments you’re posting only make you look desperate, just as they do for any liberal pundits or politicians. The slick, well-sold Obama persona will be irrevocably tainted by these scandals. Whether it’s serious or relatively minor, he will not come out of this without scars. While most reporters will likely at some point go back to giving Barack the same favorable treatment as before, learning their 1st Amendment rights were violated will have them reporting honestly for a while.

Just accept that this is a fight you will never win, in fact already lost, and hope that Hillary doesn’t get exposed to the point that her chances in 2016 are gone.

    • ladyluck

Actually, there is a vast difference, and State and the WH know it, between an act of terror and terrorism…..Look it up,Wil and learn something.

For starters, where’s the video of Obama NOT in Situation Room that evening? Have you seen any details of his activities, normally we get this sort of stuff ad nauseum. I like to kid, but this is serious, if you and Barry are blind to the mistakes made, it’ll happen again.

It’s become obvious that it’s now acceptable practice to interject opinion into hard news stories. Personally, I believe that the practice originated on TV news broadcasts with Walter Cronkite’s observations on the Vietnam War. It seems to have now progressed to the point where the expression of opinion doesn’t even have to be subtle and in fact can be the main point of the “story”. The saddest part is that it passes as verified fact.

Back in the 30s, Germany pursued a campaign to marginalize a certain sector of the population by accusing them of all manner of evil-doing. We are now seeing similar language when it comes to conservatives. Bankers & other professionals engaged in capitalist pursuit have become “banksters”. (Is that perhaps code for “Jews”?) Conservatives & patriots have been labeled as racists, bigots, potential terrorists & the American version of the Taliban. We all know where this led for Germany. We are just beginning to see the outcome of this kind of campaign under this administration & its media enablers. This is unsettling, to say the least.

  • Anthony Bonagura

I heard Bernie slander the “birthers” on Bill O’Reilly for I don’t know how many times now. He does so without ever examining any of the evidence from the on going criminal investigation of Obama which Bernie choose to ignore. This investigation has proven that the April 27th, 2011 birth certificate is a FORGERY. They have proven that the Obama E-verified flagged SS# is fraudulent and why it is fraudulent. They have proven that Obama fraudulently registered with the Selective Service in 2008 not in 1980. Bernie chooses not to examine the evidence which proves he is no longer a credible journalist. Diana West calls this scandal the “biggest fraud that has ever been committed against the United States” and Bernie and Bill O’Reilly ignore it or make excuses for this fraud and criminal and usurper in the WH? One must ask WHY? Both Bernie and O’Reilly will be spending a lot of time washing the mud off their faces when the scandal does break and it will break.

    • Drew Page

Even if proven to be true, Carney will say “That was a long time ago” and Hillary will say “What difference does it make” and the yo-yos at the NYT will say “Republicans have another so-called scandal to seize upon”.

Everyday the MSM is committing FRAUD. Purposeful deceit. Sometimes it’s even criminal…but its FRAUD nevertheless.

  • Wheels55

I agree. I also think the media’s job is to keep a variety of thoughts running around in print and on the air so that the general public will just give up and not care. Most of the public only reads headlines anyway. So, the true power of the media is in their headlines and what they don’t say. As Hillary said, what does it matter? As Jay Carnage said, it’s an old story. They said that so Joe Q Public will look away thinking that there is no longer anything to see. Sadly, their tactics work.

A scandal is NOT a scandal when the BSM does a news blackout on it. Kinda like the forged long form BC and Selective Svc. Card for Sideshow Barry. Just call anyone that’s looked at the evidence a “birther” and move on. Ridicule is a favorite Alinsky weapon of choice… Nothing to see here…

    • AgentofACORN

Birthers bring their own ridicule. It comes from the fact that the birth certificate and everything else are not forgeries. the documents have been verified to be legitimate beyond the shadow of any reasonable doubt. This places birthers in the realm of unreason.

      • It’s almost over

If what you’re saying is true, why then is the name of the hospital, on Obama’s birth certificate, not the correct name of the hospital back in 1961? If he was born in that hospital in 1961 it would’ve had a different name. In 1976 the name changed to what it is today.

        1. Back in 1961 people of color were called ‘Negroes.’ So how can the Obama ‘birth certificate’ state he is ‘African-American’ when the term wasn’t even used at that time?

        2. The birth certificate that the White House released lists Obama’s birth as August 4, 1961. It also lists Barack Hussein Obama as his father. No big deal, right? At the time of Obama’s birth, it also shows that his father is aged 25 years old, and that Obama’s father was born in “Kenya, East Africa”. This wouldn’t seem like anything of concern, except the fact that Kenya did not even exist until 1963, two whole years after Obama’s birth, and 27 years after his father’s birth. How could Obama’s father have been born in a country that did not yet exist? Up and until Kenya was formed in 1963, it was known as the “British East Africa Protectorate”.

        3. On the birth certificate released by the White House, the listed place of birth is “Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital”. This cannot be, because the hospital(s) in question in 1961 were called “Kaui Keolani Children’s Hospital” and “Kapi’olani Maternity Home”, respectively. The name did not change to Kapi’olani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital until 1978, when these two hospitals merged. How can this particular name of the hospital be on a birth certificate dated 1961 if this name had not yet been applied to it until 1978?

If Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his lead investigator Lt. Mike Zullo didn’t have the evidence to convict Barry Soetoro the DOJ would be all over Phoenix, AZ with arrest warrants for both men. They would be arrested for sedition and sent on their way to Leavenworth for attempting to take down the POTUS. Holder won’t touch this with a ten foot pole because he knows HIS BOY is guilty of fraud and crimes against the United States. He does not want this investigation to ever make it into the media circles. Diana West is not a run of the mill journalist, she has reviewed the evidence and has determined that this is “the biggest fraud ever committed against the US.” Lord Christopher Monckton, a brilliant man has warned his Brit political friends that this scandal is about to break wide open and using the laws of probablility applied to the evidence concerning the forged birth certificate he came up with a number that wouldn’t fit on this page proving the FORGERY is indeed a FORGERY. Is there any organic food for a braiin that has been declared dead?

        • AgentofACORN

All the evidence proves that every birther claim is false. Just read the snopes.com page your fellow Fantasy island resident provided a link to. The birth certificate is real. The SS# is not fraudulent, nor is the Selective Service registration. Diana West came to the wrong conclusion because she is biased against the President in much the same way Fox “News” is. Monckton gave up any credibility he had when he embraced birtherism and gave up journalism to work with the conservative media.

They (MSM) are already trying to find cover for Obama.

  • nickshaw

Gee, Bernie, I wonder how the LSM will handle the new revelation about Skeeter’s half brother, Malik’s, “charitable organization” that got IRS approval fast tracked and retroactive?
Is it me or are all of Skeeter’s relatives either con men , criminals or welfare cases?

  • Russ Oasis

The mainstream media gets away with politicizing every issue and yet they never get called on it. Why? Because the general population is too uninformed (OK…stupid) to read between the lines and understand what is being foisted on them. Aside from the fact that the general public doesn’t follow politics (or the government), many only hear talking points and never pick up on the sublte shading that the press continues to conduct. The IRS issue should send a cold chill down the spine of every American, Democrat or Republican. By the way, the IRS issue doesn’t surprise me in the least.

  • ted

Power. That is the goal. The Progressives know how to gain and retain it. Nothing else counts. That goes for the Progressive media as well. Republicans are still caught up in right and wrong — political campaign-losing attributes. And they lose. There you have the answer to most everything political in America today.

And the Progressives know how to use power to gain even more power. The electorate for the most part is kept ignorant (after being made ignorant by a Progressive-leaning educational system) by a Progressive media. Voters are kept focused on abortion, gay stuff, the White Advantage and a hatred of the unfairness of “profits” — their measure between good and bad — while the Progressive bureaucrats are strangling the so-called, now former- free markets with minute regulations over every breath we take. The electorate spouts “war on women”, “rights”, “fairness”, “consumer protection” and so on, while their (our) very freedoms are constantly being stolen from us. Our individual freedoms to make unwise decisions, mistakes, to get hurt and be imperfect are taken from us and given to the vast Progressive-government monstrosity to collectively administer over us. The Rule of Law — where rights and wrongs are written down to be followed by all (relatively) equally — has been bypassed by spur-of-the-moment and wildly arbitrary “trust me it’s for your own good” rules established mostly by unelected, government-protected deeply partisan human beings.

It is over. The Second Civil War, bloodless at least, has been lost. Progressives own the country.

    Sadly.

Bernie, Thank you for being a voice of reason, The lame stream media has given Obama a pass up until now and as you say their slobbering love affair with Obama is starting to wane. Just now it seems they are beginning to question his decisions and policies. I am an optimist and I hope the media will now ask more pertinent questions as to what is going on in the Obama administration and its failures and follow your lead………………………

I like you your kind of retrospect journalism Mr. Goldberg, but I got to say I felt as though you were doing yourself no favors by agreeing with the kind of sentiment O’Reilly was pushing last night! He means well but he can’t seem to give his ego a rest long enough to listen to what someone like you, might have to say. And even when he’s acting like he is, he just blows it off and insist that what he said makes more sense. I’m not saying argue with him, we know that would go no where, just nod and entertain him.

  • Streetcop

Mr. Goldberg, your column, as usual, is spot on. The facts are the facts and the admissions have been made. Independent councils should be appointed and convictions made.. or not depending on the evidence gathered. The AP, Benghazi, and the IRS scandal’s need a fast and accurate adjudication. Heads need to roll over these atrocities.in our government. Political careers as well. Prove the cover-ups.

  • OreRain365

It is interesting now to see the outrage by AP now that it is learned that they are the ones who have been scrutinzed. I can hear them squeeling like a pig all the way in Portland, Oregon. Ya gotta love the libs.

  • Johnny Deadline

I honestly didn’t anticipate the media turning on The Immaculated One until this fall or early next year. Their sudden indignation and reinvigorated role as government watchdogs rather than lapdogs is refreshing. Personally, I’m trying not to gloat (not too hard though) and plan on enjoying the trio of scandals bought and paid for by Team Obama. It’s like Watergate in 3D with Dolby surround-sound!

  • ulyssesmsu

Well, I think, well, that you ought to, well, stop saying, well, well every sentence or two, because, well, it just, well, sounds, well, stupid.

  • mike caddell

Now that the Obama administration is starting to attack even the liberal media, i.e., Associated Press reporters, it seems that there might eventually be some light shed on the Whitehouse socialist soul and anti-conservative bias by the liberals themselves; however I seriously doubt it. To NBC, CBS, ABC, The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and the liberal Hollywood elite I would quote a prominent leader who made the famous statement during the commie trials that were being prosecuted by Joe McCarthy: SENATOR, HAVE YOU NO SHAME!!

    Liberals: have YOU no shame?

  • AgentofACORN

One of the many answers to the question posed by Bernie is: When the “scandal” is created out of whole cloth by the Fox “News” Channel solely for the purpose of President Obama (or in this case him and Hillary Clinton). I am not referring to the IRS scandal, but to the Benghazi non-scandal. There are some conservatives that have become so obsessed with the idea of impeaching President Obama that the idea is reaching birther levels of ridiculousness. I look at the title of the NYT article and what I see from it and the article itself is that conservatives finally have a legitimate scandal (and this is DEFINITELY a scandal. What the IRS has done in this case is deplorable and decidely unAmerican) Between the efforts of FNC, which created the Benghazi “scandal” storyline, and the rest of a compliant conservative media, the focus has not been about the deaths of the Americans in Benghazi, its been about how can we smear Obama and Clinton. When FNC does things like this, it makes it harder for the reality-based media to take conservatives seriously because the line between political fantasy “scandals” (Benghazi) and real scandals such as the IRS case are blurred. The average conservative who actually believes that FNC is a legitimate source of news is woefully misserved by what Fox does. From the perspective of the reality-based media, now conservatives actually do have a real scandal. The question is will FNC give it that same type of breathless coverage ito the IRS case that its given to its manufactured scandals?

    • ulyssesmsu

      Silly nonsense.

    • Johnny Deadline

Unbelievable. Four Americans died, Hillary and Obama flat out lied to the families of those slain, lied to the American people and lied to the international community at the UN two weeks later, imprison a filmmaker on some stupid charge, and you insist that Benghazi is a non-scandal? Twelve talking point revisions and you think there is no there, there? An investigation that didn’t bother talking to the secretary of the department being investigated who publicly assumed full responsibility? Low-information voter, we know thee well.

      • AgentofACORN

To paraphrase the late great Ronald Reagan: The problem with our conservative friends isn’t that they’re stupid. It’s just that they know so many that aren’t so. Where was the smoking gun at last week’s Benghazi circus hearings that FNC promised us?

        • Johnny Deadline

Benghazi isn’t about FNC – it’s about obtaining answers to how four brave Americans were murdered after repeatedly being denied security requests from Obama’s State Department. As for a smoking gun, Benghazi Barry is more apt to sustain a thousand paper cuts from all the paper pushing searching for the buck that stops…with no one.

          • AgentofACORN

Of course its about the Fox “News” Channel. The non-existent cover-up story was created by Fox, disseminated by a compliant conservative media and then accepted by conservatives without question. The Fox lackeys in Congress then started their inquiries. We were told that witnesses where being threatened. Turns out that was a lie. We were told that bombshell revelations would be made at Wednesday’s hearing. Didn’t happen. In the latest series of lies that Darrell Issa has been spouting about Benghazi, he went on one of the Sunday talk shows and blatantly lied that Thomas Pickering refused to testify before Congress. He looked completely shocked when Pickering sat down next to Issa to call him out on his lie and correct the record.

          • Johnny Deadline

So Bush lied, kids died. Fox reported, Obama aborted? How can the cover-up story be nonexistent when earlier this week both Jay Carney and Benghazi Barack continued to lie about what changes were made to the talking points? Fox didn’t force Hicks, Thompson and Nordstrom to whistleblow to Congress nor offer them Fox Contributor status. Will Pickering and Mullen appear privately with Issa’s committee as requested? So Pickering has agreed to appear before Congress? How generous, although he would certainly be and should be subpoenaed if he didn’t.

        • missnancy

Umm, excuse me, that’s not a paraphrase rather very close to precisely what Mr.Goldberg was saying in the first place. Love it when liberals make the conservatives’ point while scrambling to try to counter with their own..whatever that is.

    • http://www.facebook.com/thinmangone Jimmy Cooper

Hey Mr. Acorn; I would like to hear how you can say there is no scandal concerning Benghazi. If I may just make one point. The White House claimed they got the talking points Ms. Rice shared on the Sunday news programs straight from the IC! Well originally maybe, but when they got done editing them Gen. Petraeus said that’s not what we told them, and would not sign off on the edited version! he testified to such! Then BINGO all of a sudden it’s revealed he was having an affair! You must step in a lot of stinky stuff Mr. Acorn if you can’t smell that!

  • cliffy44

Mr. Goldberg, I’ve always given you credit for more intelligence than you displayed at the end of this segment (http://youtu.be/K2A4hhdESPM) .

It doesn’t matter where the person known as obama was born. It wouldn’t matter if he was born on the steps of the white house or the steps of The Statue Of Liberty. The truth of the matter as specifically referenced to in Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 clearly and specifically state:

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

By the time of their inauguration, the President and Vice President must be natural born citizens (including naturalization passed from parents), obama’s mother was a natural born citizen. obama’s father was not. Nor, did he ever possess American citizenship.

And for that reason; as specifically stipulated by the US Constitution, obama is not constitutionally eligible to seek or to hold office of the President of the United States.

I am NOT a birther. I am, however a constitutionalist, who believes wholeheartedly, in the values and conditions of the United States Constitution.

And, apparently, by your misstatement, respectfully, Mr. Goldberg, it’s quite apparent that you don’t.

Megyn Kelly REALLY get under The O’Bloviator’s skin by calling ‘im “Cliffie” (Clavin). Duration to be determined. How long the present Obama media skepticism lasts will be almost entirely defined by what happens with the IRS activity. The IRS is transparently lying; the question is how hooked is the IRS to the White House or the political interests effectively linked to the President.? Unlike the other two issues this one is actually potentially indictable: if the IRS can be demonstrated to have shared information with liberal interest groups someone is likely going to jail. I doubt Obama was aware of the activity, but that remains to be seen. Certainly someone in his political circle likely was.

A discussion this morning (5/15/13 on CBS’s Morning show went through a list of things the FBI/Justice Dept. had to legally go through in order to find leaks they thought came from AP. Bernie, your best phrase tonight on the Factor was “raw partisanship.” Your cancer cure example was on the money. If only we lived in a world in which you could bring ultimate clarity to your point (in a way I know you in your heart of hearts wants to do because you almost named names one night a few years ago) … there are some on the right who are bad for the right, and by extension bad for the country because they impede the right winning some public debate(s), public opinion and yes, even some elections.

Trouble is, much like Islam, there is no Pope, no central figure with moral authority or gravitas to hold up the mirror and speak the truth which needs to be spoken. That’s a shame.

    @DanFarfan

  • joepotato

BG made a disrespectful comment on the “birthers” by insinuating they are imbeciles and irrelevant. The “birthplace” of BH O’Soetoro is just a part of the puzzle. The thing that most critics don’t understand, is that the real issue is the true citizenship of BHO or whatever his name is. There has been NO verifiable evidence anywhere to prove what citizenship O’Barry actually has or for that matter, what his legal name is. This diversion on the issue will be addressed at some point. In the meantime corruption reigns in the new USSA.

    • AgentofACORN

Bernie was right on the money with his comments. You are imbeciles are you are irrelevant. The “issue” of President Obama’s has never been a legitimate issue. It has stemmed solely from the inability of some white people to accept a black president. The evidence has been presented and verified to be legit. That’s why Bernie said what he said because birthers have demonstrated an incredible capacity for denial and an inability to deal with reality.

      • enorl76

Ok, so when John McCain’s citizenship was questioned, was that the inability of white people to accept a black president too?

        • AgentofACORN

Pay attention. That was done to highlight the hypocrisy and stupidity of the birthers.

      • crofootski

What, are you still living in the 60s, agent? I know back then there would have been whites who hated the idea of a black president (or even a 1/2 black one). Times have changed, man; the only people keeping racism alive are ones like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and others who keep black people resenting whites.

        • AgentofACORN

Unfortunately, that’s simply not true. If it was, conservatives would not have created and employed the Southern Strategy which they’ve used in every presidential election since Reagan.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

Whether it was the conservative Democrats like Strom Thurmond who fought against civil rights back then (and subsequently helped to start conservative migration from Dem to GOP over their hatred of black people) or today’s conservative Republicans who share the views of their conservative Democrat predecessors, the racism is sadly alive and well amongst SOME conservatives.

The fact of the matter is that Sideshow Barry has a shady past and verifiable forged documents… In his approved bio it states” Born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii…” Also an AP article early on stated the following, “Kenyan Born Obama all set for US senate” so … But wait there’s more …( I don’t have any more time for this) In his own words he once stated that he was not a Natural Born Citizen …

        • AgentofACORN

Look at the link above provided by the village idiot to snopes.com It put the lie to everything both of you wrote.

      • enorl76

You’re completely wrong about being able to accept a black president. I don’t see Barack Obama as a black president.

I do however, see him as a divisive president that appears to revile by injecting race politics into current events. That is when I see him as a black president. Or maybe he’s white-black, just as Zimmerman is white-hispanic.

  • EddieD_Boston

  • I Hate Fascists

A better place to live? Maybe for you, but that’s all that counts right? An issue to seize on? Actually no, a non-issue to seize on is more like it. Are you aware that an Accountability Review Board headed by former Ambassador Pickering and former Admiral Mullen investigated Benghazi from every angle? Like your columnist Daly, you make no mention of it, likely have not read it, and disregard it because it focuses on the real issue which is a terrorist attack that we were unprepared for, and not the non-issues which are parsing talking points, who wrote them, and debating whether the terrorists were card carrying Al Queda terrorists vs a bunch of random terrorists. And as for your right wing “social welfare organizations”, this is another non-issue. Because although they in fact have no “social welfare” function, at the end of the day they all were granted their tax exemptions. The real issue being that in spite of that you lost the election anyway. And finally the phone records of the AP, do you really think the lamestream media will turn right wing? Not likely, no doubt most of them know what a right wing administration would mean. Which is censorship, imprisonment, and/or “disappearance” as in Iran, China, North Korea. And they would be nostalgic for the days where the worst thing the administration did was to go thru their phone records.

    • Patrick H.

Do you mean the investigation where Pickering admitted that they never asked Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State any questions considering this was her territory? Also, weren’t they chosen by Hillary Clinton herself? Isn’t that sort of like the foxes appointing who gets to investigate who raided the henhouse?

      • Kernighan

I believe he is simply demonstrating what Mr. Goldberg so ably described. Two different sets of standards. The system works this way: If it hurts the GOP it is OK, if it helps the Democrats it is OK, but if it hurts the Democrats it is bad and wrong, or if it in any way helps the GOP, it is also bad and wrong. Simple system, huh? No need for any actual system of ethics, simply examine what the effects are upon the two different political parties. :)

        • I Hate Fascists

And where is that Gutless Wonder Goldberg anyway. Seems he will respond to anyone here that will kiss his butt. Otherwise not a peep out of him.

      • I Hate Fascists

4 of the members were chosen by Clinton, the other by Clapper. Pickering and Mullen have impeccable credentials. And they did not cut any slack on the State Department or Clinton, and likely have destroyed her Presidential ambitions, if that makes you feel any better. After being denied the opportunity to testify, Pickering confronted Issa on national TV and now Issa predictably has punked out and now says he will call on both Pickering and Mullen to testify. So we will see what happens next.

        • enorl76

“Issa… has punked out… and now… will call on both… to testify”

That’s correct, because Issa is Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and hence, calls people to testify, under oath.

          That’s his function. Duh.

      • joepotato

It all boils down to one thing: how many $#it sandwiches are Americans going to eat before they demand justice?

    • Kernighan

Go ahead and remain deluded into the belief that North Korea, China, Iran and likely several other miscreant nations are examples of right wing fascist, totalitarian regimes. In fact the first two in the list are Communist countries. By far history, properly studied and honestly reviewed shows that far more totalitarian regimes through time, have, in fact been Socialist or Communist, ergo ultra – LEFT. By historian’s tallies over 100 million people met an early death at the hands of these LEFT oriented totalitarian regimes. Don’t worry about the comical right wing of the USA ever, EVER establishing any sort of totalitarian regime – it is totally inimical to the Constitutional Republic form established in the real nation of the United States of America. Simply not in the cards. I’m not predicting here, I’m absolutely certain. I have actually read the Constitution. You might want to try doing that. It actually only takes a few hours. Even when you concentrate.

Incidentally, you are wise to detest Fascists. Now you need to know how they arose — example: Benito Mussolini gave up his career as principal editor of the primary continental European Communist journal, to move to what he believed was a superior system: one, that had most of the elements he admired in Socialism, but which amplified national unity, and subsumed the individual totally to the State. Oh, just read Jonah Goldberg’s book.

      • I Hate Fascists

You are brainwashed bro. The right wing is united in hatred. Their idea of freedom is freedom for haters to hate, shooters to shoot, polluters to pollute, and the filthy rich to become filthier and richer. Yeah they are a clown show, but the joke will be on us if they can recapture a handful of Senate seats and steal the Presidency by means of voter suppression and genetic engineering of the Electoral College.

        • John Daly

Unbelievable…….

  • kayakbob

At most, today’s seeming tougher stance by most of the media toward the W.H. and the President specifically is just a lovers quarrel.

It makes me think of a cop or two that I have known. They said the thing they hated most was a domestic abuse call. Why? Because, regardless of the fact that the woman (usually) had called for help, and was often beaten to a pulp, the second they slapped the cuffs on the guy – the woman often would direct their pent up frustration and anger at the cops.

That’s what this is. They are tough on Obama, until the very nanosecond it begins to actually have a negative effect on his approval ratings. Then they will be directing that same “toughness” toward his detractors.

You know the yet-to-be-disclosed story is bad when suddenly the IRS and the DOJ essentially offer up well timed scandals as distractions. Obama/ Jarrett will keep the press occupied and outraged until Benghazi is forgotten.

  • Bruce A.

It looks like it’s a scandal only if the Lamestream Media says it is. Fox does not count despite the higher ratings.

    • BernieGoldberg

exactly, Bruce. I make that very point on O’Reilly tonight.

    • http://twitter.com/DanFarfan Dan Farfan

I disagree. The lesson of Benghazi is that when Fox decides something is a story, it’s considered an opportunity for cover for the anti-Fox media to ignore it. That’s not “not counting.” That’s counting a lot.

Not counting would be not paying attention at all. They know what Fox is doing, because they do pay attention because Fox does count, just not as one of them doing legitimate work such as them (so-called).

At least once a week, what Fox is doing is in the calculus in its competitors’ meeting rooms, I bet.

      • AgentofACORN

It’s not that Fox decided it was a story, it’s that Fox created the story. How many times does Fox have to lie about a story, and then get called on it, before folks wake up to that fact?
Remember when Fox took out a full page ad in newspapers asking how the reality based media had missed the story of the Tea Party rally in DC? The picture they used came from CNN’s camera on top of the Canadian Embassy and was from CNN’s coverage of the event. Much like Benghazi or Gosnell, Fox over covers stories and then whines that the reality based media “ignored” the stories. In the case of the Tea Party Rally, Fox gave a disproportionate amount of coverage because FNC was a cosponsor of the rallies, something no legitimate news organization would do.

  • Kathie Ampela

I think the Benghazi scandal is bigger than the spineless, useless sycophants in the press:

Bernie…let’s not underestimate the mother of the gentleman killed in Benghazi and her wrath. Hell hath no fury and I really believe she is going to be a grassroots factor …..#mamabear

Thank you, Bernie, for writing “Bias” and educating the masses on the media game. I’m sure it came at great personal and professional consequence to you.Being a whistleblower is not easy, I’m sure.
I’ve researched the Benghazi story on my own, and the more I learn, the angrier I get, especially after the testimony of the whistleblowers on the Hill last week. I can only hope Congress continues to hold hearings. There is so much that lies beneath the surface story, the truth has to continue to be told.
I don’t trust the timing of the “scandals” this week, I suspect a politically designed diversion away from Benghazi. Where did the IRS “scandal” originate from, anyway? When the “scandals” survive into next week’s news cycle and beyond, then I’ll start to take it seriously. I’m just sitting back and watching it for now.
