Because now his legacy is having a mental collapse on a debate state in front of the world, the revelation that his administration covered up his worsening condition for years, and forcing a last-minute nomination change that resulted in Donald Trump, the guy who tried to overturn the previous presidential election, regaining the White House.
I don't buy that standing down in 2022, with otherwise the same administration officials (and likely the same policies) in place, would have caused worse damage. Nor do I see how it would have set back the prospects of woman president being elected down the line.
