If Biden stepped down 2 years earlier we would have had 2 years of yes "the first woman president" but it would have been President Kamala Harris which would have been worse than an impaired Joe Biden. She would have been a disaster and a major embarrassment to this country.
To be clear, I don't care about the president's gender. Just saying that it would have been seen as a historical positive for Biden.
And if one truly believes (as I do) that the president was/is mentally unfit to serve, I do believe even a fully functional empty suit from the same administration would have been a better choice.
A few points I thought are clear results since this election. First, is the rejection by the American people of Hollywood's support and endorsements of a presidential candidate. I believe America has heard enough from the Beyoncé, Clooney, and Winfrey's.
Next was the influence of podcasters like Joe Rogan and other alternative media other than the MSM. Places where many and especially younger voters get their news and opinions.
I believe there was a message by the American people that we are fed up with DEI and how far political correctness has gone.

1) returning $100B to Iran to fund world terrorism with NO EXPLANATION, funding a war against our ally Israel, & Iran building nukes. Completely idiotic.

John: I agree with almost all of your column except your declaration that Kamala would have won the 2024 election had Biden stepped aside in 2022. She was always a poor campaigner outside of her safe space of the California electorate. Would a longer campaign do her any favors? Other stronger candidates would have emerged in the Democratic primaries, and I think their nomination and election is far more likely. Of course, Gretchen Whitmer would have been one of these stronger alternate candidates, so maybe your prediction of a female president was accurate in this scenario.

Vice Presidents rarely win the Presidency running as an incumbent Vice President, and then they have to announce the results of the election in the new Congress.
GHW Bush was the first to win the Presidency as an incumbent VP since the mid 19th century.

Because now his legacy is having a mental collapse on a debate state in front of the world, the revelation that his administration covered up his worsening condition for years, and forcing a last-minute nomination change that resulted in Donald Trump, the guy who tried to overturn the previous presidential election, regaining the White House.
I don't buy that standing down in 2022, with otherwise the same administration officials (and likely the same policies) in place, would have caused worse damage. Nor do I see how it would have set back the prospects of woman president being elected down the line.
