I enjoyed the entire commentary, and I agree with the assessments across the topics. I learned a few things. I would like to comment on the Canadian tariff situation. I know a thing or two about how many Canadians think and act. I was one. I have many relatives in Canada. Many years ago, I emigrated from Canada, went through the Naturalization process and became a proud U.S. citizen. I have 100% loyalty to the U.S. and in many cases support what Trump is doing. However, Trump doesn't understand most Canadians. They are generally a fairly quiet peaceful people until they get riled up. Then, their patriotism is second to none. Just ask anyone who fought against the Canadians in WWII. My father served in front line combat in the Royal Canadian Army. The tariff fight has alienated the Canadians but in time, that will get settled, be in the rear view mirror, viewed as a business issue, and in time relations will resume. However, what will NEVER ever go away were the insults of relegating this proud quiet country to that of another U.S. state that is there simply for the easy plucking. Also, the attacks on the Prime Minister Trudeau unified Canadians even though many (me included) can't stand him. Canadians are talking about this a lot and their patriotism is now growing. Any Canadian from a certain age on up will never let the insults completely be forgotten. It's a form of betrayal. Poking an old friend in the eye just because you can is not a negotiating tactic, it's assholery.

You two are really clever in the way you cover up being shills for the democrats-by criticizing democrats!

You must be joking Scott, you are dumb as a box of bricks, and very ill-informed to believe that for a NY minute! Not Bernie and John. I watched Bernie as a kid in NY on CBS decades ago. He's real.

Scott was actually joking.

Trump is virtually guaranteeing a Democrat victory at the next election.

His scorched earth policy in the tariff trade wars will guarantee that.

P.S. you are thinking of Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. This is easy stuff to Google.

Yeah Bernie, reality check, Trump isn't winning an award for anything let alone a Nobel Peace Prize, He might think that, but hell will freeze over before the Nobel voting committee agrees to that.

Question John for you. Do you believe the US Congress has a plan to move to a balanced budget? And do you believe we can do it without tax increases either on the front side (Tariffs) or back side through increased income taxes?

Yes, I like that ,and respect that. I love that, actually. I'd like to know what Bernie's thoughts are re. Trump poking and hitting Zelenskyy in the arm 3x in the Oval meeting. Go back and take a look. That was almost unbelievable, to me.

Bernard - former President Obama got a Nobel Peace Prize for....wait for it…… NOTHING, but the color of his skin. So what if President Trump wants a NPP, if he can stop the Ukraine carnage, who cares. You and your buddy care so you can bash President Trump. He has a ceasefire, so button it!

You should stop pretending you know why the market is dropping. You don't know, you're just repeating the left's messages. The market got completely inflated by Lyin' Biden driven by his unchecked inflation. Perhaps it's a technical deflation correction and profit taking, who knows. But one thing is for sure, you are a sports guy, not a financial guru. So stick to your knitting. And your echo buddy is even less of a financial expert masquerading as a financial know-it-all.

You both just hate President Trump, and look for reasons to bag on him. Admit it. BR

Bob's programmer with a fresh host of zingers!!!

>>former President Obama got a Nobel Peace Prize for....wait for it…… NOTHING

I know. Pretty stupid, huh?

>>but the color of his skin.

Nah, it primarily had to do with him being seen as a repudiation of Bush's War on Terror, if only just rhetorically. Like I said, it was pretty stupid.

>>So what if President Trump wants a NPP,

Exactly. So what? Unlike Trump, I couldn't care less about the Nobel Peace Prize. The fact that Obama got one for doing nothing to bring peace to anyone or anywhere proves how much of a joke it's become.

>>if he can stop the Ukraine carnage, who cares.

He literally added to the carnage by purposely half-blinding Ukraine, and then sitting on his hands for days while Russia upped its attacks on civilian areas and killed hundreds of Ukrainians.

Why did he do that, Bob's programmer?

>>You and your buddy care so you can bash President Trump.

Yes, I've merely been pretending to care about Ukraine (on this website and elsewhere) for the last three years, while donating a good amount of money to Ukraine humanitarian efforts, in order to use the issue as a line of attack against Donald Trump in the year 2025... should he become president again.

The long game. You've nailed it!

>>He has a ceasefire, so button it!

LOL. A 30-day cease-fire FROM UKRAINE, the country being invaded. If Putin agrees to it, it will literally be the 26th time in the last ten years. (He violated all 25 that came before it).

>>You should stop pretending you know why the market is dropping.

You should stop pretending you don't know why the market is dropping.

>>You don't know, you're just repeating the left's messages.

And by "the left," you of course mean practically every freakin' economist on the planet.

>>The market got completely inflated by Lyin' Biden driven by his unchecked inflation.

Yeah, that's totally what's happening right now, Bob's programmer. 🤪 Seriously, why not just blame it on unicorn farts?

>>who knows.

Everyone except Trump-zombies and Internet bots.

>>But one thing is for sure, you are a sports guy,

This is so funny to me, because I've seen this phenomenon online before. People like Bob's programmer have no idea who Bernie is, so they Google him, find a clip of him interviewing Mike Tyson or someone else for Real Sports, and decide he's just some sports journalist or something. Nothing more.

>>not a financial guru.

Bob's programmer, if someone were to kick you in the nuts, would you need a medical guru to tell you why your nuts hurt?

>>So stick to your knitting.

?

>>And your echo buddy is even less of a financial expert masquerading as a financial know-it-all.

I'll direct you back to the nuts scenario.

>>You both just hate President Trump, and look for reasons to bag on him. Admit it.

If you can't find a reason to bag on someone helping Vladimir Putin kill Ukrainians, you might be a bot.

Two wrong won't make it right, right?

Expand full comment

There are no two wrongs here, only one. And it's not Ukraine.

Expand full comment

Yes, there are indeed two wrongs. The first wrong was Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The second wrong was President bad mouthing Zelensky and blaming him for the invasion - Pres. Trump claimed he's a dictator and that he could have prevented the invasion or at least stopped it early by negotiating with Putin. Yah right! Then he actually said that Zelensky started the war.

Bill O'Reilly did his best to provide Pres. Trump cover on this and just about everything else.

That said, I agree with what I think Bernie was implying in the above dialogue, that Zelensky would have to let Putin keep at least some of the territory he has invaded, at least until internationally supervised elections can take place. The U. S. will need to give Zelensky security guarantees. The mineral deal will give him some sort of security, but there must be more.

The only other alternative is to liberally and timely supply the Ukraine with weapons, intelligence and possibly training. But here, the fly in the ointment is that Pres. Trump will probably not do this even if Putin rejects the settlement offer. Even if Pres. Trump does do this, it's highly unlikely the Ukraine would beat back Russia and make them quit.

Recently I was visiting a friend in Berkeley. We wandered in Revolution Books, the bookstore of the Revolutionary Communist Party. I told the chick manning the store how bankrupt Marxist-Leninism and communism is. She kept saying "We have to deal with reality." I failed to see the logic in this reply, but I think it's generally good advice especially in difficult situation like the Ukraine war.

One point of correction (I think):

Bernie was thinking of the Ontario Premier Doug Ford (tough as nails & effectively the Canadian face of tariff pushbacks). His brother was the late flamboyant Rob Ford, once the mayor of Toronto & a guy who was...let's just say...not boring.

Pierre Poilievre is the current Conservative Party leader in Canada. Pierre WAS previously well-positioned to take over as PM before Trump's tariff nonsense. But Trump unfortunately put him in a tough position & the Conservative lead shrank dramatically. So Trump not only excels at losing winnable Senate seats; he may in fact take this unenviable talent to international heights by causing a US-friendly & principled conservative to lose as Canadian PM.

Expand full comment

Yeah, I realized when I watched the episode back (during editing) that Bernie was referring to Ford, not Poilievre (I made mention of my mistake in the show notes).

Poilievre would be a great leader for Canada, but as you say, Trump may have screwed that up. His knack for knocking competent leaders out of contention has gone international.
