Here from ND. We are always being talked down to...everywhere, all the time. I know people voted republican just to give the media a big middle finger. I for one am so tired of being lectured to by 20 year Olds. I have no problem voting for a woman, a black, latino..anything. Ms. Harris...as my dad used to say...doesn't have a brain in her head.

I saw an interview of an Independent that voted for Trump just for that reason. He was sick of celebrates telling him that if he didn't vote for Harris, he may lose the right to ever vote again.

I do think Bernie was definitely onto something there - Donald Trump is basically the personification of a giant middle finger to the establishment - the political establishment, the academic establishment, the media establishment, the entertainment establishment, etc...

In 2016 after Clinton conceded, Van Jones (on the CNN election coverage panel) was close to tears and his voice was shaking as he stated - "This is white lash." It is no surprise to me that he claims Harris lost because she is a woman of color.

Trump is not a threat to the Constitution. The architects of the Constitution constructed it in a way that makes it impossible for an individual to be a threat to it. If they had not done so the Constitution would have been obliterated long before Trump was born and we would not have a Republic.

I am very relieved that Harris has been defeated. That is not an endorsement of Trump the individual. With the Senate in Republican control for the next two years any potential Supreme Court nominations will be Constitutional conservatives. That alone is good for the United States of America.

Mr. Goldberg and Mr. Daly, thank you for your analysis. Another interesting episode. Thank you.

Great commentary! Thank you!! Look forward to seeing you on Bill O’Rielly’s news show, Bernie!

I broke my golden rule, and watched a bit of cable news last night. I'm not sure what was more obnoxious: the circle jerk on Fox, or the wake on CNN... This was supposed to be hard news coverage of a presidential election, but it was cheerleading for Harris on CNN, and of course cheerleading for Trump on Fox.

Losers insult. Winners get the last laugh. Maybe Bernard can explain it to John. BR

And John Daly has started the insults and to paying customers. Liberals ever the smart business men, NOT. Mocking customers is a hard way to build a following. Hahhah..BR

Oh Bob... You personally insult us, call us names, and assign us false positions and world-views ALL THE TIME. Heck, even my hat triggered you this week.

If you can't take a little ribbing in return, you might just be a snowflake.

Bernard - I think you are finally waking up to the fact that President Lyin' Biden and the VP Canadien Cackler screwed ups everything they touched. John Daly is still hopelessly stuck in the liberal mud with that dumb ass cap. When you both re-process the JAN6 action and recognize it as political persecution of Trump supporters, I'll believe you finally get it. It was a sea change election illustrated by the Senate flip. And now onto legal processing of Biden family's money laundering scheme. Biden is a crook. BR

Well the election is over and I took a day off to lose $100 when I should have trusted the bookmakers. It's 2016 Deja Vu all over again!

Agreed, inflation maybe better but if I’m working the same amount of hours I was with the same pay rate when Trump was in office before but now I have less in my pocket after paying for basics-I think you can understand why Trump was a better pick. Harris didn’t seem to explain how she would fix anything with inflation besides telling companies they had to cap prices (I think that’s not legal).

Also, I rather listen to you (Bernie) and John, I might not agree with your opinions but you both seem to be fair minded.

FYI, I have been analyzing tariffs and I’m thinking that they do or can cause inflation, however, they can drive up state side manufacturing. I’ll get links John, if it’s (tariffs) used effectively can work well and be a win/win.

When I say listening to you both, talking about as opposed to the main stream media.

Some good points. But I am disheartened. I am not optimistic, I don’t think the Republican Party will ever come back from Trump and trumpism. How could they? They’ll tell themselves America is crazy about the MAGA brand. I am so disenfranchised with both parties, any ounce of partisanship in me is gone. I despise identity politics with skin color on the left and occupational identity on the right. And I’m sorry Bernie, though I think there’s something to your elite argument, that’s always been in play. But on the ground out here you should see the talking down trump supporters do to anyone who didn’t vote for Trump (Libtard, moron etc) all sorts of nasty names. This Republican brand has created their own MAGA media that is on par with the liberal mainstream media, bullying and picking on anyone who doesn’t change their Facebook profile picture to Trump. I have very little sympathy for either side. I think there are some good people on both sides who are misguided but the true believers on both sides of the media and electorate are awful and nasty. That works both ways

Good commentary. I do have one question I hope will get some discussion.

That question is: what impacted the vote most, social issues or economic issues?

[disregarding the lesser of two evils personna}

Democrats have always had a consistent economic policy but seemingly have abandoned their workable social agenda to something so bizarre few can relate to it.

Final thought for the moment out of scripture: “For out of prison he cometh to reign” (Eccles. 4:14). We have seen many surprising reversals in the past few months.

The apparent threat of tariffs for negotiating is real. The actual threat is unlikely.

Negotiating what? More money out of U.S. taxpayers' wallets?

His last tariffs were a dud. They hurt U.S. manufacturing, drove up prices, drove up government subsidies, and got us nothing from other countries. Yet, they were the economic focal-point of his campaign.

I am sensing an empty threat that the new tariffs will materialize. But I could be wrong.

Australia was the only country to dodge tarrifs in the last Trump administration, not so sure we'll be that lucky if it ever comes to fruition.

Bernie... I like you view of the world of politics - it has not changed following the election. Who's going to keep the Duckman in check for the next four years? Thanks.

Bernie, there is no replica of Donald Trump and you’re right, Vance is a bright guy. I can’t imagine him saying in 4 years, “I can’t think of a single thing.” when asked if he would have done anything differently from Trump. On a different note, what thoughts do you have on the disappearance of 14 million voters who supported Biden. I find that very strange. They certainly didn’t flip to Trump. They simply vanished.

There was historically high turnout in 2020, in large part because voting-process changes for Covid made it more convenient than ever for people to vote. Some of those changes were rolled back, post-pandemic, and with more people back to work and out and about in the world (instead of sitting at home), turnout for 2024 was always expected to be lower -- somewhere between the turnout in 2016 and 2020 (which is what happened). And a number of voters (mostly independents) did flip back to Trump.

Expand full comment

I like to think of the 2020 democracy being put in an oxygen rich hyperbaric chamber due to Covid. That accounts for why so many voters were voting. Now without that, some folks wonder why the numbers dropped by 18 million. There are 329 million Americans who technically could vote, minus those under 18, etc. So we have never had a 100% popular vote—though 2020 reached out for it.

Except Trump’s number dropped, too.

I should have written "flip to Trump," not "flip back to Trump." Turnout as a whole as down, with Trump picking up a higher percentage of votes than last time.
