Sheriff Chuck Wright has suggested that the legal system is failing, and that women should carry a gun to protect themselves.
There was an immediate outcry from the usual people. “More guns equal more shootings!” “Think of the poor children!” “you’ll shoot your eye out”!
More interesting were the number of women who not only agree, but are already armed. It seems that many women have already reached the conclusion that they are on their own when it comes to self-protection. In addition to guns, martial arts classes and other forms of self-defense training have become very popular with women. Mace, stun guns, and pepper sprays, fly off the shelves.
This is not an indictment of law enforcement. The police do what they can to get the bad guys. They show up when you call them…but let’s face it, by the time you can call, and they can respond, the crime has been committed.
It is an indictment of a judicial system that has failed to punish criminals and a prison system that hands out keys to the front door with the first prison breakfast.
In Oregon a couple was just sentenced to 6 years in prison because they chose to pray over their premature baby instead of taking it to the doctor. Perhaps it was a poor choice, but it was not a malicious act. The sentence was at least 2 year more than the average given for aggravated rape. It was only a little less than many of the murder sentences in this state. This couple is not going to break into my house and pray over my sick child, or prevent me from taking him to the doctor. The rapist, on the other hand, is most certainly going to rape again. Who will be the victim of the rapist turned out early because there was no bed in the prison for him? Hopefully a woman with a gun!
I have been shooting since I was a kid. I have a gun in the house like I have a microwave in the house. It’s there, it’s a tool, I know how to use it. If you ask my husband, he’ll probably tell you I’m better with the gun than the microwave. However, I don’t advocate gun ownership for all women.
If you are considering arming yourself there are some things you should do first:
1. Go take classes! Find a place that will train you on a number of different weapons. Many places have classes just for women.
2. When you are comfortable with shooting, think about you. Do you know in your heart that you can kill? If the answer is no, move on to the next suggestion. Pulling a gun and not having the will to use it is as dangerous as not having one to use.
3. Consider other forms of self-defense training. Martial arts not only can help you defend yourself, but they are good exercise. Pepper spray, mace, etc. are handy to carry although not as effective against some people. For instance, someone high on drugs may not be slowed by pepper spray. Tasers are effective, but if you miss, you are done.
Once upon a time almost everyone in the country was armed. They armed against the predator, and against the lawless. Times have not changed so much except that the lawless and the predator are one and the same.
Happy shooting, ladies!
