On Sept. 20, just six weeks before the election, the New York Times projected that (including leaners) the Democrats would win 214 House races and the Republicans 187. Its projections showed that if the 34 races labeled as toss-ups were to split evenly, the Democrats would easily hold onto the House — by the wide margin of 231 to 204 — as the Republicans would pick up just 25 House seats.
