How Can Obama Respect An Electorate That Would Re-Elect Him?

From time to time, I’ll hear a political commentator (typically a conservative one) suggest that President Obama does not respect the news media. It seems like a pretty odd claim to make. After all, no other president has been protected and promoted by the news media the way Obama has. They’ve largely defended him against criticism, categorically supported his policies, and touted his brilliance and greatness at every opportunity. One can’t deny that they played a major role in getting him elected…Twice!

It stands to reason that Obama should feel forever indebted to the news media, but I tend to believe those conservative commentators are right. I don’t think he respects them.

If he respected them, he wouldn’t come across so visibly irritated on those few occasions when he’s actually asked a challenging question by a reporter. If he respected them, he would have spoken to them during the final weeks of the presidential campaign instead of to morning zoo deejays, the fawning ladies of The View, and David Letterman. If he respected them, he’d grant substantive access to more than just the same two or three softball questioners in the news media he typically talks to. If he respected them, he wouldn’t hold so very few press conferences after repeatedly pledging “openness” in his administration. If he respected them, he wouldn’t have the gall to push a fabricated story to cover-up the cause of four American murders in Libya, and just assume they wouldn’t bother trying to expose the truth.

I suppose the disrespect makes sense. I would imagine that it would be difficult to respect relative strangers who would lend you their unconditional support regardless of what you say or do to them. Under that same reasoning, I suspect he probably feels the same way about the American public as a whole.

Let’s face it… By any traditional standard, President Obama should not have won re-election. He has done insurmountable damage to this country through his policies, neglect, and divisive nature. The decisions he’s made during his presidency have rarely been in the interest of strengthening this nation or advancing the prosperity of its citizens. His presidency has instead been about securing a historical legacy as a man who righted the wrongs of the social injustices committed by our country in the past.

It’s that agenda that has superseded any legitimate concern over the economic welfare of our country and our long-term solvency for future generations of Americans. As far as the president is concerned, those are problems for someone else to have to deal with down the road. His priority is social engineering, not economic stewardship. The result of that mindset has been chronically-high unemployment, a stagnant economy, entitlement programs crumbling under their own weight, soaring healthcare costs, and an absolutely devastating national debt that will be hanging around the necks of our children for the rest of their lives.

It’s not that the president doesn’t recognize these problems. Of course he does. I just don’t think he respects Americans enough to take action. Think about it…If our president can do so many things wrong in his first term, fail miserably to achieve every predicted outcome he put forth at the beginning of his presidency, show no interest in addressing the biggest threats to our nation, and still be rewarded with re-election, how can he possibly respect us?

It’s like that classic quote often attributed to comedian Groucho Marx: “I wouldn’t want to belong to any club that would have me as a member.”

If we can be so easily duped into lending him continued support for his narrow, fruitless vision, at a substantial cost to ourselves, there’s no reason for him to value our best interests and the best interests of our children. Instead we’re only worthy of the politically-popular scraps he occasionally throws to us.

When you attribute that frame of mind to the president’s actions, many things suddenly start to make sense. It makes sense why he thinks so many of us aren’t capable of making it on our own, thus require the firm hand of government to manage our lives. It makes sense why he seems perfectly content to let the country fall off the fiscal cliff – adversely affecting nearly every American – for no other reason than to punish his political opponents. It makes sense why he doesn’t feel obligated to fulfill campaign promises, and why he’s so comfortable in his routine practice of contradicting his own rhetoric. It makes sense why he promotes pointless gimmick-policies as answers to serious problems. It makes sense why he never shows any qualms or shame in finding scapegoats to assign his failures to.

If the electorate refuses to demand respect, it’s simply not going to be given any by this president.

Not sure why this blog turned so racial and into name calling.. The subject is pertinent is to all if they are truly looking for answers or some kind of sense to this whole issue. Mr.Daly filled in some missing pieces for me. I have people who I love that continue to support Pres Obama, yet I am so perplexed as to why. This article HAS helped me to understand what I despise so much about the Obama administration. The social engineering!!! The very big issue I have yet to understand is why people continue their support for him. Why do their eyes remain closed? We can call them names, but they are our countrymen and for some reason do not understand the implications of what is changing and happening. I AM sorrow!

Obama uncovered: Race huckster and rich Chicago ultra leftist Valerie Jarrett is actually running the country. Long time crony of Michelle Obama, Jarrett is the primary “advisor” to Obama and Michelle ensures Jarrett’s orders are obeyed once she clears them. We are Little Africa.

Now I know what Prohibition must have been like. Somehow, someone led our nation into believing that “ridding” ourselves of alcohol would cure all the evils in the U.S. For thirteen years we endured prohibition before finally figuring out that it needed to be repealed and that we were foolish for ever prohibiting such. The Democrats, the mainstream media, and Hollywood are all doing their best to prohibit the ‘evils’ conservative ideals and, at the moment, it seems to be working with a majority of Americans. Someday, the rest of our nation will wake up and notice that the only winners were those who could make a buck off the Liberal agenda (much like the rum-runners, gangsters, politicians, etc, we now have campaign donors who run ‘green’ upstart companies and yes, we still have politicians) while the rest of America suffered. I just hope it doesn’t take America 13 years to realize what they have done and what is being done to us.

Will Obama replace disgraced Lisa Jackson of the EPA with yet another African-American female / male? The suspense is unbearable.

  • Phil Silverman

REally? On a Bernie G. blog? The man who works for once fair & balanced station now Republican Party “war” room? The Lftist Media. By 2013, we know that it is suffiently counter-acted by Foxnews, Limbaugh, Jerome Corsi, Alex JOnes, Drudge, Coulter, InGraham, Levin, Dr. Savage, Freedomworks, Wayne LaPierre.

I can’t believe your parents let you have a computer in your room, Phil. It should really be moved to a living room where they can supervise you.

      Hey Phil, got white guilt?

Obama the dictator needs to show nobody respect. He is king of all and the great commander. He will surely go down in history as the greatest American President… between 2009 and 2016.

    • Phil Silverman

Give me one example of dictatorship by Obama….implementing the Bush II TARP?

      • Wheels55

His use of Executive Privilege, like with immigration – Dream Act actions. Also, like how he says he will be transparent but then shuts down Holder with Fast & Furious or stone walls the understanding of the Libya Ambassador killing. Do as he says, not as he does.

Let’s pose a different question: Is the American public that re-elected such a man worth of respect? I say emphatically: NO. Fact is, they are blind, mindless sheep being led to inevitable slaughter by this sneering leftist and his flunky surrogates (mostly mainstream press and US educational system) that are single-mindedly determined to dismantle our Constitution and what many of us old-timers remember as “the American way.” I mourn for my country and what it has become.

  • Venter

I liked your article and agree with you. I keep asking what the “H___” happened. What were the voters thinking. The MSM actually got Obama elected and can not be trusted. The are not reporters and are a disgrace I figured out how the media got so bad..I believe many in the media got their jobs because they knew someone ( Chelsea Clinton and others) They didn’t have to prove themselves and learn how to investigate and report a story. Their jobs were waiting for them . It’s a club. I agree Obama used them and plays with them . I always felt Obama never respected us! He never looked into our eyes when speaking only the teler prompter. You put my feelings into words .Thank!
This fall has been tough on a lot of people the reelection of Obama, the hurricane Sandy, the Newton killings( with all the blame on guns and not evil people) and the fiscal cliff. I almost believe the president i is enjoying the fiscal mess. I am ready for the fall I got my chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Souvoter

Excellent article, John. You have summed up Obama’s legacy completely!! These are my exact views to a T.

    • John Daly

      • Phil Silverman

Your piece is a disgrace. Obama won by 4 million popular votes and despite swing state maneuvering to keep his base away from the election centers. His base stood on line for 8 hours. You appalled by Obama ending the Cheney-manufactured War in Iraq ahead of time? creating a decent # of jobs despite the GOP mision statement to mock any legislation he sends over? Good jobs bills and infastructure bills not read and Red state governors encouraged to send back stimulus $$$$. Because Boehner cowered to the Tea Party-John Birch element the country was nearly shut down and we got a lowered S & P rating. With AHCA (which used Romneycare experts to write) cancer patients cannot be rejected for mercenary reasons, as before.
So go get your pat on the head by Bern’ and by extension, Roger Ailes…further up the chain, the Kochs.

        • John Daly

So… Now that you’ve gotten that off your chest, do you have any thoughts on the actual column? Have you even read it yet?

        • Switchlight13

Obama, our first Mulatto president got 51% of the vote. A landslide by any measure.

  • GlenFS

John, I’ve been thinking the same thing, and wondering how the voter respects herself as well. Are the media and voters so clueless that they can’t plainly see it? They must be. Either that or shame is dead in America as I’ve also been thinking, and it just doesn’t matter to them. I’m a life member of this club, but if I weren’t, I’m not sure I’d be submitting an admission request, whether they’d have me or not.

    • John Daly

I keep telling myself that support for Obama comes from a coalition of committed Democrats and people completely oblivious to the damage being inflicted on our country (I realize there’s some cross-over there). I imagine that the latter doesn’t have a self-respect problem because they simply haven’t a clue what they’ve done. The former, however, makes me wonder. How any Democrat who understands the economy and worries about their children’s future can continue to support Obama is beyond me. Their unconditional allegiance is why I don’t believe Obama respects them.

      • Switchlight13

He’s Black (actually a Mulatto) and a Socialist. A winning combination in 2012 America. And the sheep think he’s “so sexy”.

        • Phil Silverman

Your post here is racially charged and has been reported.

          • Switchlight13

lol. You see racism in everything that surrounds you.

      • Phil Silverman

what damage..all we are getting from you is biased opinion. Democrats don’t understand the economy? by politely asking for a return to 39.6% so Americans can get tax relief up to 250k??

        • John Daly

Biased? Oh, that’s right… I’m supposed to be on the Koch brothers’ payroll. I forgot.

Phil, we have a national debt of almost $16.5 trillion. Our annual deficits have been over a trillion dollars for the past four years. Obama has demagogued every plan to reform the leading drivers of that debt, without offering one of his own. He’s signed into law numerous regulations that are killing economic growth and hiring in this country. Our economy is an unmitigated disaster. Obama has spent us into oblivion, and its my childrens’ generation that will have to deal with it.

For you to ask, “What damage?” is appalling, even for a DNC drone.

To suggest that a take hike (that will pay for eight days of government spending) is the answer to ANY problem is ridiculous as well.

I’m not one of the people I described in my column, Phil. Try serving your kool-aid elsewhere.

  • Switchlight13

I have no respect for those so-called Americans who voted for Obama. They are worthless sheep who deserve the collaspe thats coming thanks to their stupidity.

    • Chris Matthewson

Another Daly delusional diatribe, to which the haters and the lowlights will respond approvingly. Of course, Mr. Daly’s response to any criticism will be that we haven’t really read it, or understood it. Well, to paraphrase Groucho, Daly’s rants are at least becoming educational: Whenever I see one again, I’ll shut off my computer and go read a book.

      • John Daly

lol. Chris, you’re always so cute. It’s like listening to that little kid from Jerry Maguire trying to talk to the grownups.

Believe it or not, even with a number of libs who come here to feign outrage over our columns, you’re the only one I suspect has some sort of clinical incapacity to register what he’s reading. At least the others seem to be able to identify the actual argument they’re unnerved over.

That being said, I support anything that compels you to shut off your computer and read a book. Let me know if you’d like any book recommendations.

  • DanB_Tiffin

Wow, that is a one-way-street with that guy. You all already know which way.

    • Phil Silverman

Can U elaborate? please no cheatin’ with Fox news memo cards.
